Tell us when a retired member dies
Please let us know if a retired member dies. We will contact the member's beneficiary(ies) if a death benefit is payable to them.
The death of a loved one is a difficult time, with many details to take care of and many decisions to make. Please contact us as soon as possible after the death of a retired member so that we can make your experience as easy as possible.
Once we know that a retired member has died, we will stop paying the pension and start the process to pay any potential death benefits to the named beneficiaries.
The last regular pension payment is made at the end of the month the plan member dies. If we do not know a plan member has died and we continue to make pension payments in the month or months after their death, this overpayment must be paid back to the plan.
After a plan member dies, send us an email, fax or letter that:
- Identifies the plan member using their full name and two personal identifiers such as their Person ID, full name, date of birth, telephone number or address
- Provides contact information for the executor named in the will
- Includes a copy of the death certificate
We will send a letter to the executor, named beneficiary or spouse explaining the death benefits, including payments, amount and duration. If the beneficiary is an organization, any remaining monthly pension payments will be paid in a lump sum to the organization. Please contact us if you have any questions about this process.
Health care coverage through a retired member’s plan
If you were receiving BC medical, extended health care and/or dental benefits through the retired member’s pension plan as a spouse or dependant, please contact WorkSafeBC People Services. They will let you know if you are eligible for continued benefit coverage and will send you the appropriate forms for you to complete if you are. Please have your social insurance number available when you call.
Death benefits from other agencies
Contact Service Canada to notify them of the death. They can answer your questions about the Canada Pension Plan, old age security and related programs.
