How to address a concern or appeal a decision

Find out the steps you can take if you have a concern about how the plan rules were applied.

Have a question or concern about your pension?

If you have a concern about BC Pension Corporation’s service or a decision that’s been made that affects you, we want to hear about it. We care about getting things right—please phone or write us. In most cases, we can resolve the issue quickly, easily and to everyone’s satisfaction.

Any person entitled to a benefit, or their agent, has the right to examine plan documents, plan data and public information about the plan.

What happens when you contact us

Pension Corporation will review the information you send, as well as any relevant background information on file. We’ll respond to you promptly with answers to your questions or information about how we’re addressing the issues you’ve raised. As the administrative agent of the WorkSafeBC Pension Plan, our priority is to ensure we apply the plan rules correctly.

If you aren’t satisfied with our response

If you aren’t satisfied with our response, you can write to the director of pension operations at Pension Corporation. Include any information and documents relevant to your concern.

The director will review what you provide to determine whether the rules were applied correctly in your case. Immediately after completing this administrative review, the director will send you a letter either confirming or changing the original decision.

Option to appeal

If you’re still not satisfied after the director’s administrative review, you can appeal the matter to pension management at WorkSafeBC. You have six months from the date of the director’s letter to start the appeal process. As with the administrative review, the manager will send you a letter about the decision.

If you aren’t satisfied after pension management’s review, you can appeal the matter further, to the WorkSafeBC Board of Directors. You have 60 days from the date of the manager’s letter to continue the appeal process.

Please note that you cannot appeal the plan rules. You can only appeal a decision Pension Corporation or pension management at WorkSafeBC made in applying the plan rules.
