COVID-19 update: To minimize service impacts and ensure the safety of our staff, we’re not accepting paper documents. Please send your personal forms and paperwork through My Account Message Centre. If you cannot access My Account, aren’t a pension plan member or are submitting on behalf of someone else, please contact us.

Tell us if an inactive plan member dies

Please let us know if an inactive plan member dies so that we can pay the death benefit to the beneficiary or estate.

The death of a loved one is a difficult time, with many details to take care of and many decisions to make. Please contact us as soon as possible after the death of a plan member so that we can make your experience as easy as possible.

If an active plan member   dies, WorkSafeBC will notify the WorkSafeBC Pension Plan.

If a plan member is inactive    and has left their pension contributions in the plan, the spouse, beneficiary or executor should notify the WorkSafeBC Pension Plan of the member's death.

Contact us and we will review items that you need to submit:

  • Identification for the plan member that shows their full name and two personal identifiers such as their Person ID, full name, date of birth, telephone number or address
  • Contact information for the executor named in the will
  • A copy of the death certificate

We will then send a declaration form to the next of kin to confirm any current or former spouses and to confirm the beneficiary(ies). This form must be notarized and returned to us, along with a copy of the will if applicable.

We will then send the beneficiary(ies)   a Pre-retirement death benefits statement outlining the death benefits they will receive and steps required to receive payment.

If you are the executor of the estate, we can only share information with you about the estate portion of a death benefit. We cannot share whether a portion of the death benefit is payable to one or more beneficiaries.
